Our volunteers are vital in our mission to empower women through safe housing and specialist support, helping us to deliver vital work to vulnerable women and their families.
We believe that volunteering is an important way to gain new skills and recognise that there are individuals within the community that are able to assist us in our service provisions. In this we help them to develop on their existing expertise and they provide us with the time and energy that helps us to continue helping vulnerable women. In a supportive environment we aim to help volunteers meet new people, increase self-esteem and confidence while gaining experience of working in a professional environment.
This year we received more than 200 initial enquiries about our volunteering opportunities and 110 completed volunteer application forms. We shortlisted for interview 69 candidates and appointed 33 new volunteers and 3 Social Work Student placements as follows:
In total, including those who continued in their role from the previous year, 44 people volunteered at Housing for Women from 1st October 2015 until 30th September 2016 contributing with 5,763.25 hours of hard work, effort, support and dedication. This has a value of £190,000.
Among many other things, volunteering is a stepping stone for individuals to gain access to paid employment. We helped and encouraged our volunteers to apply for jobs both within Housing for Women and external to our organisation and helped them to recognised their strengths and areas or development. 43% of all departed volunteers left their role because their obtained paid employment.
By volunteering with Housing for Women, you can have a direct positive impact on the lives of vulnerable women and children while gaining new skills and enhancing your CV. Volunteering is a great way to kick-start your career and increase your confidence in a supportive environment. You can find out more about our current volunteering roles here.
Volunteers make an enormous contribution to our services by building bridges with our tenants and service users or supporting core operations at our Head Office. In return we offer volunteers meaningful roles with regular supervision and training opportunities that have a real impact on women's lives.
