Keep Christmas borrowing under your control

xmasOne in three of us will take on debt to pay for our gifts and celebrations. Although its a time of giving, you don’t want to give yourself a headache in the New Year, paying off debts you may not be able to afford.

It’s all too easy to overspend but not everyone has access to cheap credit which is why it can be easy to fall victim to the loan sharks who make borrowing so simple.

Cash and doorstep loans are usually for small amounts of money, often between £50 and £200, which are delivered to your door and repayments are collected in the same way. Online companies can put the money in your account 15 minutes after you apply for it. But all this comes at a very high price and may mean you could be repaying for years to come.

If you need a loan to tide you over and you’re finding it difficult to get one don’t turn to these quick fix lenders. Try your local credit union, a non profit organisation that may be able to help, especially if you are on a low income. They charge a moderate rate of interest and they will also be able to give you general help and advice on saving and borrowing. We had speakers from local credit unions at this year’s Tenants’ Conference so if you would like more information please visit www.findyourcreditunion.co.uk or contact the office on 020 7501 6120.
